UK UNDER23/20 TRIALS FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
PLUS HEART OF ENGLAND LEAGUE
Kyle Ennis and Leigh Watson can be pleased with reaching the semi-finals of their events at the UK Trials for Under23/20 European Championships held at Bedford over the weekend. The Banbury Harrier sprint duo may reflect that it could have been better for contrasting reasons.
Ennis finished an excellent second to Olympian hero Adam Gemili in his heat of the 100m to qualify for the semi-finals in a time that one hundredth a second outside his club record. In the semi if he had recorded a time similar he would have made the final. The same fate followed in the later 200m,
Watson also made the under twenty semi- finals in a time equalling his best only to obtain a slight hamstring pull and having to withdraw from going onto compete further.
Banbury Harriers found the fixture tough in the Heart of England Division One fixture at Derby on Sunday. With the Oxfordshire Schools Championships also being held which cost the club a number of their stronger athletes. This unfortunately did affect the other seven clubs as these were held the previous week.
This said the team still produced some good performances and can still retain division one status at the final fixture in August.
Shannon Parker in a strong high jump competition all thou not winning produced a best ever 1m 50cm, the under seventeen later won the long jump. Tory Mobley also in this age group won her 1500 metre race.
In the under fifteen girl’s Emily Thompson competed at both meetings and secured a good win at Derby in the 300metres. Other good performances came from Naomi Anderson in the sprints and Rebecca Scott in the high jump.
Three good wins came in the under thirteen girl’s age group Victoria Harte and Evie Hawkins won both 70metre hurdle races and Shannon Dawes the javelin.
In the boys Nathan Greiveson won the javelin in the older age group and Will Thompson ran a strong 1500metres.
In the under fifteen age group both Michael Quinn and Bailey Moulton gained good points in their individual events and ran good legs in the 4x100m relay to gain third place against good quartet’s.
Charlie Yates produced the best performance for the club in the under thirteen’s age group in the long jump.
The pick of the under eleven’s was Giano Winkler in the boys long jump and 75metres and Matilda Donachy in the howler throw.
