club update including coaching courses, final track & field event, road running and winter training
Hello

Coaching Courses
As most of you know the club has seen a massive influx of young athletes over the last 12 months, resulting in a shortage of Coaches. As the club is willing to cover the cost of courses for helpers/parents who commit to help out on a regular basis I wanted to share detail of some upcoming courses within our area:

  • Athletics Leader (1 day, no assessment) course taking place in Aylesbury on Sunday Sep 29th. This qualifies Parents/Helpers to look after small groups of junior athletes so long as Level 2 Coach is in the vicinity.
  • Coaching Assistant course (2 day with assessment) taking place in Rugby over the September 21/22 weekend. A more detailed course allowing the holder to run sessions with less supervision.

Both qualifications ensure that the holder is insured by UKA and include DBS (CRB) checks, both of which are required by anyone to qualify as a coach. If anyone is interested, or knows of anyone who is, please let me know ASAP and I'll be in touch (to avoid confusion please state your name, the athlete your linked to and which course you would be interested in).

Final T&F event of 2013
This weekend sees the final Track & Field meeting of the season with an Oxfordshire League fixture at Horspath. This event covers age groups from U9 to U17 and so it would be great to see all of the available positions filled and a large group of Quad Kids out there. Last weekend in Tamworth we struggled with a lack of U13 & U15 boys, and it's very disappointing to see that we've a number of members who have not competed at all this season. Please remember that it states on your membership renewal that:

Banbury Harriers primary function is as a competitive athletics club. We encourage all members to compete for, or

represent the club on a minimum of 3 occasions per membership year otherwise we reserve the right to review membership.

Please speak to Ann Workman about places for this event.

Road Runners
If you know of anyone interested in joining the Road Running section or Cross Country groups please shout up. We understand that many adults looking to start jogging/running do not consider us, as they believe that we don't take beginners. Please therefore, share the word that this section is open to enquiries from all abilities and they will work with people looking to improve their fitness and increase distance/speed over a period of time. Also, maybe parents would like to get some exercise at the same time as their children are training?

News Updates
I'm aware that some people may not be receiving these occasional updates. If you know of anyone who isn't getting this mail, please ask them to check their junk mail and add this address to their 'safe list'. Once we can switch to a Banbury Harriers address (instead of Hotmail) I hope this issue will be minimised.

Autumn / Winter Training
Would all parents/carers please note that as the nights darken and temperatures drop we will continue to train outside on the track whenever possible (we only give up in very heavy rain, and snow/ice, cold dry winter nights don't put us off! ). We will have the option of the Indoor Sportshall and Gym after October Half Term, but please ensure that your children have suitable kit for either scenario. Also, PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF YOUNGER (U14) ATHLETES IN THE CAR PARK AND LEAVE WITHOUT CHECKING THAT TRAINING IS TAKING PLACE. IN SOME CASES JUNIORS HAVE BEEN LEFT IN THE CAR PARK WHEN THE CLUBHOUSE IS STILL LOCKED. We request that Parents/Carers take sensible precautions and ensure that athletes are delivered to and collected from the Clubhouse.

Communication
Please check the club website www.banburyharriers.org and our Facebook page for regularly updated information.

Many thanks
