Reports for Midland League Cannock, Motavation Combe, English schools, Heart of England, Hornton 6 & N.Y.A league
Midland league
Janek Maciejewski establishing a new divisional league record for shot putt, helped soften the fact that with a major lack of athletes on Saturday in the third of four fixtures Banbury Harriers find they are in grave danger of relegation of the Midland League.
The fixture held at Stafford was always going to be tough, with so many short in both the male and female combined team. The final outcome found Harriers in last place of the six clubs. The results over three completed fixtures still find the club in fourth position, with a promotion relegation situation of two up and two down, all can be resolved at Tipton next month.
The small team took on a number of events that were alien to them attempting to gain points which joint team managers Mike Hughes and Perris Wilkins were pleased with the response.
Wilkins on the day with Maciejewski amassed easily the highest number of points in the throws of all six clubs. This was certainly appreciated and recognised by the other competing clubs.
Other good performances on the day came from a winning jump and good series in the triple jump from Shana Parker. This should give her good confidence prior to next weeks English Schools Championships at Birmingham. Ros Kelling once again showed the younger athletes home when winning the 1500metres also recording another sub five minute’s time for the race.
Also at the weekend both Margaret Coombe and Bruce Hendrie took part in The British Masters Championships at Cardiff. They both returned with a certain amount of success. Coombe took gold in the pole vault for veteran sixty fives and pushed the bar up to 1m 81cm, this establishing a new British record. She also won silver’s in the shot, hammer and javelin.
Hendrie returned with out medals but ran strongly in both the 200m and 400m in gusty conditions in the veteran 60 age catergory.

 Mota-vation Coombe
The third race in the Kidlington AC Mota-vation series took place at Coombe last week. The race which completed a third success was won by Aldershot Farnham and District athlete Mathew Ashton in 19minutes 6 seconds, this a new course record.
First local runner home in 5th place was Banbury Harriers Tim Wright in a time of 20minutes 59 seconds. Hook Norton’s Dave Tame came next in 21st place, then three Cherwell runners Ian Thomas 44th, Shalden Mullins 47th and Vince Archer 56th. Dave Warlow of Hook Norton followed next in 60th place, just in front of the first lady Jennifer McBain of Alcester, her time 24minutes 24 seconds. Michelle Bartlett was first local runner home and fifth lady in 90th place, first Hook Norton lady was Sam Rees in 155th place and first Cherwell lady Dawn Williams in 173rd place of the 303 finishers.
Phil Coy completed the East Midland Grand Prix series at Milton Keynes and gained the overall silver prize for the series in the veteran 55 age group.
English Schools
The six pupils from the Banbury area schools can be congratulated on their performances in the English Schools Championships held at The Alexander Stadium, Birmingham on Friday and Saturday.
Cosima Berry of Tudor Hall competing in the intermediate age group, for under seventeen year olds at high jump just narrowly missed third place on the count back, with a best clearance of 1m65cm.
Connie McMillan of Warriner School also in this age group, making her second appearance in the championships. This time in the 300m hurdles after last year’s appearance in the 800 metres, she lowered her club record in the heats to qualify for the final with a time of 45.6seconds. In the final she finished sixth with a time slightly slower. This that both Mike Hughes Banbury Harriers hurdles coach and UK discus record holder Perris Wilkins feel could be the event that see her excel at.
Shana Parker of Chenderict School the third person in this age group, produced a club record in the triple jump of 10m 95cm. This qualified her for the following days final but she was not informed until fifteen minutes prior to the start of the final. She took part and finished 10th with a slightly lesser distance.
Two pupils from BGN took part in the junior age group Jennie Weston and Edward Wilson. Weston taking part in the long jump, reached the final and finished 8th, with a best of 5m 02 cm, this only a inch short of her club record.
Wilson also finished eighth in the javelin with a best throw was 47m 83cm. The sixth person also in the javelin was Megan Moran her best throw was 24m 36cm placing her 14th.
Heart of England
On Sunday Weston, McMillan and Parker all helped Banbury Harriers consolidate their position in division one of the Heart of England League.
Weston won the long jump, finished third in both the high jump and discus. Then saved her best for last running a pulsating first leg in the 4x100m relay. Her performances and excellent wins from Tory Mobley 1500m and Hannah Cousins 75m hurdles, kept the under fifteen girls on course for the title.
McMillan and Parker played their part gaining good points in the female older age group. The former just missed winning the 80m hurdles, clipping the eighth flight hard. The latter gained good points in the long jump and sprints
Others who helped the club to a solid placing on the day included Stuart Howlett in the under thirteen age group winning both his 100m and hurdles races and a massive personal best in the long jump. Nathan Grieveson also performed well and the pair played a large part in winning the 4x100m relay. Andre Sam was the pick of the under fifteen boys and Rebecca Scott and Seb Hartwell of the under eleven’s.
The under seventeen boys finished on a high note the foursome of Bert Rowett, James Allen, Joe Carter and Ryan Hanks beat a very good Rugby quartet to win the 4X100 metre relay.
Hornton 6
Steve Naylor of Woodstock Harriers took the field apart to win the Hornton Six by over a minute on Saturday. A field of nearly 150 starters set off from the new modified start within the village. The start was changed from the original start opposite to the playing field this enabling the runners a more conservative approach to the first big climb directly passed the playing field.
This played into Naylor’s hands and from the outset he charged to the front and was fifty metres clear from the pack as he left the village. Behind followed a pack of ten runners, of which included Paul Fernandez of Abingdon, Gary Harris of Headington and James Bolton also of Woodstock, two of these former winners of the race.
This continued with Naylor increasing his lead pass the old Ironstone Works and onto the turn for Horley. The pack decreased to above three as they made a vain attempt to close the gap. Naylor snaked his way through Horley and increased his lead and this continued until the finishing line back at the village appeared and he crossed in 32minutes 20 seconds. This just over thirty seconds out side the course record. Fernandez, Harris and Bolton followed in that order and in 10th place came the first local runner Banbury Harrier Simon Pritchard. He also a former winner of the race and his placing and finishing time of 35m 53s gave him second prize as a vet 40. Three runners of the host club Cherwell followed next for the Banburyshire clubs, Dan Peabody 12th, Ian Thomas 16th and Carl Tucker 20th.
The first lady came home in 26th place this was Jennifer McBain of Alcester in a time of 38m 34s. The first local lady home was Cherwell’s Dawn Williams in 67th place.
