Banbury midweek meeting
A good entry and ideal conditions last Wednesday gave Banbury Harriers an excellent platform to continue with once a month with their midweek open meetings throughout the summer.
Many strong performances came from the clubs athletes, but to be fair the two outstanding showings on the night came from Oxford City AC’s Danielle Anderson in the javelin and Daventry AC’s Keirnon Russ in the hurdles.
Eighteen year-old Anderson put together an outstanding series of throws, resulting with a best of 43metres 93 centre metres. Which will see her very high in the national rankings at this early stage of the season.
Russ a fourteen year old showed how he as qualified for the English Schools Championships in the Under 15 age group with superb technique in the 80metre hurdles.
The host clubs athletes also came out with credit in the girls again Tory Mobley in the 800m, also Connie McMillan at this distance. Samantha Phillips again improved on her best for 70metre hurdles, as did Megan Moran with a 30 metre plus in the javelin. The track performances of Logan Kelling, Darrious Brown and Tom Biegal caught the eye.
On Sunday there were some outstanding performances by the young Harriers in the combined Banbury and Bicester National Young Athletes team at Tilsley Park Abingdon. The team short in a number of events had to settle for third place behind Milton Keynes and Radley. This said there was plenty to savour from the day of the team.
In the female age groups performances came in all directions. Shana Parker in the Under 17 age group went close to English Schools qualifying in both the long and triple jump. Her best in the former 5m 12 cm, in the triple jump a winning jump of
 10m53cm.
Connie McMillan after her exploits in the Town and Gown run in the morning, went close to the Schools times in both the 300m and 300m hurdles races. Ali Workman produced another good series in the hammer.
In the under 15 age group Jennie Weston reduced her 75m hurdles time by three-tenths of a second to win in 12.6sseconds, she then did a excellent second place long jump of 4m 90cm. Shannon Parker a first year under 15 also jumped well with 4m 42cm. Tory Mobley ran a superb 1500m to just loose to a Milton Keynes athlete on the run to the line, her reward a life time best.
In the under 13 age group Sam Phillips for the fifth consecutive time lowered her best in the 70metre hurdles, to 13.1seconds.
Of the boys the javelin throwing of Edward Wilson reached a new peak with a throw of 47m 73cm in the under fifteen age group. Brother James also threw well and long jumped to a best, Liam Grieveson again produced two exciting runs in the 100 and 200metres. The trio joined forces with Conor Murray of Bicester to produce a good winning time in the 4x100metre relay. In the under 17age group Sam Edwards leaped to 10m98cm in the triple jump. In the under 13’s Tom Wilkin a first year in this age group won both the 75m hurdles and high jump.
These will all appear again this Sunday at The Oxford League held at The North Oxon Academy starting at 10.30am.
Oxon League
Records tumbled in the hot conditions for Banbury Harriers on Sunday at The North Oxon Academy in the Oxfordshire Young Athletes League. Easily the largest attendance at the track and possible the best ever see two long established club records tumble.
The first fell to Hannah Cousins in the under fifteen girl’s 75metre hurdles, which was held by Leigh Hubbard since 1992. Cousins as been edging closer towards the old record in recent weeks and eclipsed it by one-tenth of a second to win the race in 12.0seconds dead.
The second record fell in the last race of the day to the 4x100 metre under seventeen boy’s relay. The old record that as stood for twenty- five years fell also by one-tenth of a second. The quartet of Joe Carter, Craig Pannozo, Ryan Hanks and James Allen rewrote the record books to win the race and establish the new time finishing in 47.0seconds.
These two records combined with outstanding performances by other athletes from the host club produced a near perfect day.
Luke Sherlock in the under thirteen boy’s 1200 metre race destroyed the field to win with ease in 4m 05.9s. Also in this age group Nathan Grieveson gained winning firsts in the javelin and 75m hurdles. His winning time in the latter of 13.9s just one fifth outside the club record. He also finished second in the 100metres.
Stuart Howlett also gained double wins in the long jump with 4m 34cm and in the 200m, winning in 28.7s. Alfie Rowett matched this in the “B”string event’s, his 200m time faster the clock stopping at 28.3s.
The boys just missed winning the 4x100m relay by inches but next time they will rectify that result was their comment
The under fifteen boy’s also produced the goods. With both the Wilson twins outclassing the opposition in the javelin. Edward best again well up alongside the top throwers in the UK, finishing with best of 47m 46cm, James best and second best in the competition with 35m27cm.
Liam Grieveson again produced excellent times in both the 100m and 200m, not winning beaten by lads twice his size. The times still quick 12.0s in the former and 24.5s in the latter.Andre Sam a new member also looked quick winning the B 100m and coming second in the 200m. The foursome then destroyed the field in the 4x100m relay and they certainly can go faster.
The girls in this age group also rose to the occasion, with Jennie Weston rewriting her best in the 75m hurdles with a time of 12.3seconds. In the long jump she moved with in 3inches of the English Schools qualifying distance winning with 4m 96cm.
Megan Moran gained double wins in the 800metres and javelin, as did Sarah Biegal in the 300m and 800m. Shannon Parker and Charlotte Walton won both the “B”strings in long and high jumps.
The under seventeen age group also produced wins, Bert Rowett with only one training session over the 100m hurdles and his first time tackling the ten barriers won the race with ease. James Allen won both the A races in the 100m and 200m, Ryan Hanks took the B race in the 100m and Joe Carter won the B long jump event.
In the girls Shana Parker won the long jump and Connie McMillan the 300metres.
The pick of the best in the under thirteen girls came from Sam Phillips in the 70m hurdles, Laitaya Brown in the 100m and Lucy Koster in the 1200metres.
Intercounties Bedford
Jennie Weston and Sam Hook duplicated last week’s club record, breaking performances created by athletes of Banbury Harriers with two excellent achievements over the weekend.
Hook appearing on the big stage for the first time, this at the UK Inter Counties Track and Field Championships held over the weekend at Bedford. Took on most of the best 100 metre athletes in the UK. His reward in the heats he narrowly missed reaching the semi final but equalled the clubs overall best for 100 metres with a time of 10.93seconds.
Seb Tully-Middleton the Banbury based Birchfield Harrier ran in the 200metres, reaching the semi final’s. In his heat he recorded 21.7seconds to reach the next round, then just missed the final with an identical time.
Perris Wilkins can claim he had a mixed weekend, on Saturday at the Barry Strange Memorial Throws meeting he won the discus with four throws exceeding 50metres. This in conditions wet and cold, on Sunday in near perfect conditions he had the misfortune to over balance with his second throw which certainly would have exceeded 56metres. He caught the side of the cage with his third attempt, with implement landing at nearly 50metres but not far enough to gain three further throws.
