Heart of England Tamworth
Banbury Harriers athletes for the third consecutive week produced performances, to set new club records.
On Saturday at Tamworth both Hannah Cousins and Nathan Greiveson lowered the club record for their hurdle events. Cousins in the U15 girls age group ran 11.9s over 75m, this eclipsing the time by one tenth that she ran two weeks ago.
Grieveson over the same distance in the U13 boys age group set a new record with a time of 13.5s.These two performances and many others enabled the club to register the best ever start in there campaign in Division One of the Heart of England League.
The despite being with out several of the boys who were playing in a soccer tournament.
Midland League banbury
On Sunday at The North Oxfordshire Academy during the Midland Division Four league hosted fixture, Connie McMillan established two new club records. The first in the 400metre hurdles, she coasted home in a time of 65.4 seconds this breaking not only the record for U17’s, also U20’s that have stood for some years. She then took part in the high jump and raised the bar to a U17 record of 1m55cm. In between she won the 1500metres and ran a fast second leg in 4x100m relay. This with some highly gritty performances from others enabled the club to finish second on the day behind Cannock and Staffs AC.
The efforts of Perris Wilkins cannot go unmentioned on the day, his exploits at last week’s two meetings left him carrying a severe torn muscle in his chest. The injury causing severe bruising and pain, despite this he battled on winning the shot and discus and also gaining good points in the hammer, this a true team man. Also in the throw events new member Janek Maciejewski, also mounted a high points tally for the club. Sam Hook produced an excellent six metre plus in the long jump, sadly is effort aggravated a leg muscle restricting him running in the sprints. This left Ryan Hanks and James Allan pulling out all the stops.
Also in the jumps Sam Edwards picked up a first in the B long jump, second in the triple and good points in the high jump. New boy Jake Gardener won the B triple jump. Adam Crofts played his part gaining points in all directions.
The ladies played their part, Amy Peacock once again gained big points in the pole vault and javelin. Shana Parker gained a qualifying distance for the school championships in the triple jump.Ali Workman won the hammer and good points came Jules Dixon, Michelle Bartlett and Mel Wilkinson.
Other highlights from Tamworth came with a outstanding team effort from the U15 Girl’s, who defeated the other six clubs. Jennie Weston lowered her 75metre hurdles best winning the B string, she also won the A string long jump and B javelin. Megan Moran and Sarah Biegal gained wins in the 800metres and the former won the A javelin. Tory Mobley won the 1500m with ease.
County School Trials
The county school trials produced good performances from Banbury Harriers athletes in all three, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire.
In the Oxfordshire trials held at Tilsley Park the efforts of the clubs athletes enabled the North to take the team trophy. In the eight to nine year age group Edward Wilson again showed he could be a medal contender in the schools finals at Birmingham next month. When he easily won the javelin producing a winning throw excess of the qualifying distance for the fourth time this summer.
Also in this age group Liam Grieveson produced two excellent runs in both the 100m and 200m. The former in a time of 11.8seconds inside his lifetime previous best time.
The girls also had their successes with a one two in the 75metre hurdles from Hannah Cousins and Jennie Weston. The latter also won the javelin and produced a long jump just marginally outside the qualifying distance. Tory Mobley completed a excellent day in this age group with a convincing win in the 800metres.
This was repeated in the ten and eleven year age group, when Connie McMillan took the title and a qualifying time for Birmingham. Good points and performances also from Sam Edwards in both the long and triple jumps, Ryan Hanks in the 100m and Alicia Workman in both shot and hammer.
In the senior age group Rosie Kingston won the 100m hurdles in a new life time best and Daniel Brown collected good points in both the 200m and 400m.
The seventh year pupils also took part, although this year is not contested at the national championships. This did not stop Luke Sherlock winning the 800metres in a personal best time of 2m 36.1s.
In the Northamptonshire Championships held at Corby Shana Parker came second in the 10 and 11 year age group triple jump, with a best of 10m 83cm. This giving her both a personal best and the qualifying distance. Her younger sister Shannon also established a personal best when finishing second in the long jump with 4m 58cm.
In the Warwickshire Championships Megan Moran won the eight to nine year age group javelin with a throw of just under 27metres. Having already thrown the qualifying distance in previous competitions she now awaits to see if selected.
N.Y.A. Swindon
On Sunday in the shadow of Swindon Town Football Ground the young athletes of Banbury Harriers continued to produce excellent performances. This with Bicester AC in the combined team competing in The National Young Athletes League.
The under fifteen age group again expressed the all round talent the club processes.
Jennie Weston produced three excellent winning performances, the first another fine series in the long jump which could stamp her chances for bigger things. This was followed by wins in the high jump and javelin.
Hannah Cousins also produced a excellent run in the 75m hurdles, just failing to catch Swindon’s strong contender for the English Schools Championship, by a short head. Tory Mobley won the 1500metres showing great composure and also another sub 5minute time.
Of the boys in this age group Liam Grieveson again showed how good a sprinter he is with an excellent win in the 100m. Edward and James Wilson also gained good wins in the javelin and scored heavily in the high and long jump events.
In the under thirteen age group Sam Phillips won the girls high jump with a personal best and Tom Wilkin followed likewise in the boys. On the track Phillips won the 70m hurdles and Nathan Grieveson the boys race over 75m. Also on the track there were wins for Rebecca Scott in the 800m and Gregor Kelling in the 1500m.
In older age group Connie McMillan set a poser for the county schools selectors when producing a qualifying time in the 300hurdles alongside her 800m best.
Other wins came from Ryan Hanks and James Allen in the sprints and in the jumps Shana Parker, Mel Wilkinson and Sam Edwards.
Pre English Schools.
Six pupils from the Banburyshire schools will represent various counties in the English Schools Championships at Birmingham on the weekend starting the 9t of July. This possibly a record or equal number of pupils to achieve the honour.
Five of them will be performing in field events and one in track. The sole track athlete will be Warriner School’s Connie McMillan. This her second appearance at the championships, following last years fourth place finishing in the junior girls age group 800 metres final. This year in the older intermediate age group, it will be all change as she runs in the 300metre hurdles. The selection committee deciding that after she achieved the qualifying time last week this would be the better option. With the determination this young lady adopts she as the potential to equal last years performance.
Jennie Weston will be one of three pupils in the junior age group. This excellent all rounder will take on nearly thirty other girls in the long jump. Also like older team mate her determination will drive her on for a good performance.
Megan Moran despite living in Banbury will represent Warwickshire Schools in the javelin. She as thrown the implement beyond thirty metres this summer and time will tell how high she will finish on the day.
Edward Wilson the second of two pupils from BGN, will also be throwing the javelin. This young man on several occasions this summer as achieved the necessary distance and could be a dark horse for a medal.
Shana Parker at sixteen years old is a pupil at Chenderict School completes a quintet of pupils who are members of Banbury Harriers this arguably the most the clubs had attend the championships for years. Parker will compete as an intermediate in the event she first participated in just over a year ago the triple jump. Her best jump in that time as arisen to nearly eleven metres.
The sixth member is the highly talented high jumper Cosima Berry who is a boarderer with Tudor Hall School. She will also compete in the intermediate age group and is a member of Leamington AC. The highest clearance she as achieved in this event to date being 1metre 71 centre metres.
Oxon league Abingdon
On Sunday Banbury Harriers took part in the third and final fixture of the Try Sports Young Athletes Oxfordshire League at Abingdon. Both boys and girls teams finished with distinction, with overall finishing positions of second in the girls and third in the boy.
On the day once again there was plenty to savour from the Harriers youngsters. The under fifteen girls again took centre stage just missing the age group trophy by one point. Hannah Cousins and Jennie Weston ran the closest race of the day in the 75m hurdles, with the former finishing first and dipping under 12seconds for the third time.
Weston only inches behind but clocking twelve seconds exactly and taking three tenths of off her previous best. She followed this by winning the javelin and another five metre plus best in the long jump. Tory Mobley won the 800metres with ease and will certainly move onto bigger things.
The boys also just missed first place with some excellent performances. Edward Wilson celebrating his County Schools call up nearly hit the fifty metre’s mark with the javelin, the spear failing by only a foot. He was given great support by his brother James,Liam Grieveson and Sam Andre.
In the under thirteen age group Samantha Phillips improved on her high jump clearing 1m 30cm and ran a personal beat in the 200metres. In the boys both Nathan Greiveson and Stuart Howlett stood out winning several events.
The pick of the older age group was James Allen and Ryan Hanks in the boys and Shana Parker in the girls. The under eleven stars were Rebecca Scott, Samuel Prickett and Seb Howlett.
